01. RAISON D’ÊTRE
Aluminum foil cliché (/die), debossed onto the passepartout framing it. The first in a series of three works, in which each work utilizes one of the three commonly used metals for embossing dies. Raison d’être, the first in this series of clichéd expressions, features a plate of CNC machined Aluminum, and a foil debossed title; which is its sole reason for being. The die retains the handling marks of the engineer making it, and of the bookbinder who used it to deboss the passepartout.
02. EXQUISITE CORPSE
Brass foil cliché (/die), debossed onto the passepartout framing it. The second in a series of three works, in which each work utilizes one of the three commonly used metals for embossing dies. Exquisite Corpse, the second in this series of clichéd expressions, features a foil debossed title and its embalmed remains; a plate of CNC machined Brass. The die retains the handling marks of the engineer making it, and of the bookbinder who used it to deboss the passepartout.
The phrase ‘exquisite corpse’ both refers to Cadavre exquis – the collaborative drawing method developed by the Surrealists – and to the clichéd expression: ‘You’ll make an exquisite corpse’.
03. LASTING IMPRESSION
Copper foil cliché (/die), debossed onto the passepartout framing it. The last in a series of three works, in which each work utilizes one of the three commonly used metals for embossing dies. Lasting Impression, the last work in this series of clichéd expressions, features a plate of CNC machined Copper and the impression it has left on the passepartout. The die retains the handling marks of the engineer making it, and of the bookbinder who used it to deboss the passepartout.
